Cookies

A "cookie" is a small amount of information that a web site copies to your hard disk. A cookie can help a web site identify you the next time you visit. For instance, if you shop for books online, the bookstore's web site might use a cookie to store information about your favorite subjects, and later use that information to recommend particular books.

One website explains it this way:
Cookies are small pieces of information that are sent by a web server and stored on your computer's hard drive. The cookie never contains data that is "executed" as code, so it cannot carry viruses or programs. Cookies are linked to browser programs and do not specifically identify an individual user.

One of the ways we use cookie technology is to learn how our customers navigate the pre-login (non-secure) pages of our website. This information may be provided to and used by our Internet advertising service providers to create better advertisements about our products and services.
